Background of the Study: Intraoperative emergencies, such as bleeding, cardiac arrest, or respiratory distress, are critical situations that require immediate and efficient intervention to prevent patient morbidity and mortality (Dogo et al., 2023). Nurses are vital members of the surgical team and are often the first responders when emergencies arise during surgery. However, their preparedness in handling these emergencies can be influenced by factors such as training, experience, and the availability of resources (Musa et al., 2024). In Benue State, where healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped and resources are limited, nurses may face challenges in responding to intraoperative emergencies effectively (Garba et al., 2024).
The ability of nurses to handle intraoperative emergencies is closely linked to their knowledge of emergency protocols, their ability to work under pressure, and the availability of necessary equipment (Ibrahim & Akinyemi, 2023). Research has shown that continuous training and simulation exercises improve nurses’ preparedness and response times during emergencies (Musa et al., 2023). This study aims to assess the preparedness of nurses in Benue State hospitals to handle intraoperative emergencies and to identify the factors influencing their readiness to respond effectively in critical situations.
Statement of the Problem: In Benue State, intraoperative emergencies pose a significant risk to patient safety, and there is concern about whether nurses are adequately prepared to handle such situations. This study seeks to investigate the preparedness of nurses in Benue State hospitals in managing intraoperative emergencies, as well as the factors that influence their ability to perform during such crises.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on nurses working in surgical departments of Benue State hospitals and assess their preparedness for intraoperative emergencies. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with nursing staff. Limitations of the study include the potential variability in nurses’ experience levels and the difficulty in assessing real-time emergency response effectiveness.
